Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile are confirmed to be the three starter Pokemon for Pokemon Legends: Z-A! Read on to learn more about these new Kalos starters and our speculation on their possible evolutions.

Confirmed Z-A Starter Pokemon

Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile!

Pokemon Presents 2025 confirmed that the starter Pokemon for Pokemon Legends: Z-A are Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile!

For fans of these Pokemon, it's exciting to consider that this could mean that they gain new Regional Forms for their evolutions, or even gain Mega Evolutions!

This follows the setup of having mixed generation starters similar to Pokemon Legends: Arceus, with Chikorita and Totodile originating from Johto and Tepig from Unova.

Legends Z-A Grass Starter: Chikorita

Grass Starter Chikorita

Chikorita, who first appeared as a starter in the Johto games, is the Grass-type starter in Pokemon Legends: Z-A!

Chikorita's evolution line has historically served as a defensive utility Pokemon, with good survivability thanks to access to dual screens and recovery options.

Notably, it's been shown in the Pokemon Presents 2025 trailer, that Chikorita will have access to the Fairy-type move Disarming Voice for the first time. This may perhaps be a hint at it gaining a Fairy-type regional evolution, or perhaps gaining the Fairy-type through Mega Evolution.

Legends Z-A Fire Starter: Tepig

Fire Starter Tepig

Tepig, originally from the Unova region, represents Legends: Z-A's Fire Starter Pokemon!

In the past, Tepig's evolution line excelled by dealing high damage attacks in a headstrong manner with notable attacks in Flare Blitz and Wild Charge.

The official website makes note of Tepig's nimble and agile movements and how it is actually faster than it looks. Perhaps instead of gaining the Fighting type as it normally does in evolution, this could hint at gaining the Electric-type via a regional form, or Mega Evolution.

Legends Z-A Water Starter: Totodile

Water Starter Totodile

In an unexpected twist, the Water-type starter, Totodile, is also coming over from Johto to complete the Z-A starters trio.

Totodile's evolutions have also been known to be strong physical attackers in previous generations. Known for their tough nature and strong chomps, it might be cool to see Totodile gain the Steel or Dragon typings in a new regional form, or even by Mega Evolving.

It is also known to be quite mischievous, though. However, we hope we won't see a Water/Dark variant considering we recently just had Hisuian Samurot, and this game is likely to feature Greninja, who both share the Water/Dark typing.

But what about Popplio?

I think that the idea was to choose the least popular starters out of each type. Yeah, Tepig is kinda popular but less than other fire pokemons. Maybe Fuecoco is less biased it's too early for them, though.
