Mega Evolution Were Considered Held Items
One of the reasons Pokemon Legends: Z-A may feature Held Items and Abilities is due to Mega Evolutions—a mechanic that changes a Pokemon's Ability, and even its type, while also enhancing its stats—requiring the Pokemon to hold a Mega Stone.
With Mega Evolutions confirmed to be a returning mechanic in Z-A, it's possible that it will be the first Legends spin-off to feature both Held Items and Abilities as part of the game's battle mechanic.

Possible to Feature Abilities or Held Items
Being the second entry of the Pokemon Legends spin-off games, Legends Z-A is thought not to feature Pokemon Abilities and Held Items. However, this could change following the confirmed differences in its combat mechanics from Legends Arceus shown in the Pokemon Presents 2025.
