Fishing in Borderlands 4 requires you to use your grapple on fishing spots where fish are wading. Learn how to fish, how to farm fishing spots, and its rewards by reading below!

On large bodies of water, there may be an area where fishes are moving around in certain spots, indicated by several small white waves. When you aim your reticle on one of them, it will turn into fishing hook with the grapple prompt.
Some early game fishing spots are Stillshore and the Fishin' Spot Point of Interest. These will be at the southwest and north of the Abandoned Post Safehouse, respectively.

You are more likely to get loot when you grapple as soon as the fishing hook icon shakes. Let your reticle stay on the fishing spot, then grapple the moment it moves!

Using your grapple on a fishing spot will make an item pop up. You will need to use your grapple again while it is airborne. If it is trash like a soda can, it will be equipped on your left hand like a grenade. If it is a gear or weapon, it will be pulled and dropped nearby.

Sometimes, activating a fishing spot will pop out multiple items quickly. Make sure you do not get any soda cans because you have to throw them away to use your grapple. Aim carefully to get several items at once!
If you are unable to claim an item from a fishing spot, it will disappear. Be prepared to aim before you grapple a fishing spot.

You can force a fishing spot spawn by returning to the game's main menu, then selecting Continue to reload the world. If you do this enough times, a fishing spot will eventually spawn.
In the early game, you can use this strategy at the Coastal Bonescape checkpoint or The Stockroom Order Silo so you can respawn near a lake.

There is a Legendary grenade you can get by fishing: Slippy. Its unique mechanic is that it deals constant AoE splash damage around where it landed. If you do not have a strong ordnance yet, you can try farming for it by fishing!
List of Legendary Drop Locations

Though you will find useless soda cans most of the time, you can get gear and weapons from fishing. Just like with other loot, you can find them in any rarity.

When you catch enough rare fish, you will complete the Go Outside Challenge. You will earn EXP, cash, and Eridium every time you complete it. Additionally, you will get a customization option for ECHO-4 as a first-time reward.
