Star Pieces earned are for the character you beat in Legend Races.
In addition to Carats and other rewards, players can obtain Star Pieces. These Star Pieces can be used to uncap Umamusume star levels or unlock Trainees you haven't pulled yet from the gacha.
Whether you win or lose in a Legend Race, you will still get Star Pieces from participating in it, so it is best to partake in this race whenever you can!

Time-Limited Challenge Races
Legend Races are limited-time events in which players can participate to obtain character shards. Tickets are required to participate in Legend Races, and only a maximum of three tickets per day can be used per Legend Race.
Since race placement affects the rewards you receive, it's best to use the Veteran Umamusume best suited for the race type in each event.
