Winner of The Game Awards Game of the Year back in 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 puts Dungeons & Dragons at the forefront. Similar to a D&D campaign, you’re responsible for creating your character as you set out to thwart an evil plot to take over the world of the Forgotten Realms.

In addition to this, you can also choose to venture with characters that have their own unique motivations, questlines, and branching storylines.

8. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

| Systems | ||
| PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One | ||

| 9/10 | 10/10 | 9/10 | 9/10 | 9/10 |
In what can be considered as one of the most surprising shifts in genres, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth continues to impress by essentially being an upgrade from its predecessor in almost every aspect. The Dragon Quest-inspired JRPG follows up by creating a dual-protagonist narrative focused on newcomer Ichiban Kasuga and longtime Yakuza series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, while creating an emotional and well-deserved conclusion for the latter.
Similar to its contemporaries, it’s a lengthy story full of laughter, cries, and exciting moments that make the franchise special and memorable. In addition to all of this, you can lose yourself in the seemingly endless amount of side content that’s offered, like managing Dondoko Island, battling with Sujimons, and more.
It sets a standard of how sequels should be and how games are supposed to offer content equal to the price you’re paying, except for the paywall locking New Game Plus that should be avoided.
7. Persona 5 Royal

| Release Date | Developer | Publisher |
|---|---|---|
| March 31, 2020 | ATLUS | SEGA |
| Systems | ||
| PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch | ||
Atlus knew they struck gold with the Persona series, and one can even say that they’ve since discovered diamonds by releasing enhanced versions of their games, given their track record with releasing remasters of the same games in the series. What was already considered to be a near-perfect game with memorable characters, eye-catching visuals, outstanding music, and a compelling story, Persona 5 Royal is the definitive edition of playing through the masterpiece that is Persona 5.
Royal adds two new characters, Kasumi and Maruki, that blend well into the base game’s narrative. They’ve also added another arc to the narrative that encapsulates the message and theme of the game, which enhances not only the characters but also the experience as a whole. On top of that, they’ve also refined the overall gameplay experience with new combat mechanics, new Personas, and more day-to-day activities, to the point where you might wonder if this is already the perfect formula for the series.
6. Tales of Arise

|---|---|---|
| September 10, 2021 | Bandai Namco Studios | Bandai Namco Entertainment |
| Systems | ||
| PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One | ||
It’s no secret that the Tales series can be one of the more daunting franchises to get into. One of the reasons for this is not knowing where to start in the long list of games. But that’s one of the great things about the Tales series, since you don’t need to start chronologically. Tales of Arise, the latest entry in the series, is the perfect entry point, especially since it’s the most modernized version of the classic Tales battle system that’s been changing ever-so-slightly throughout the years.
Truth be told, Tales of Arise reinvigorated the series with its new take on combat, fresh visuals, and an interesting story, all of which are hallmarks of a great RPG. The story follows two protagonists, Alphen and Shionne, as they work together to stop the Renans’ oppression of the Dahnan people. It’s an RPG that’s unafraid to explore heavy themes and is surely an underrated RPG that you shouldn’t miss.
5. Elden Ring

| Release Date | Developer | Publisher |

With the popularity of the Souls series on the verge of its peak, Elden Ring was the RPG to push the genre into the mainstream. With a world built with the help of one of the most popular fantasy writers in the world, George R. R. Martin, combined with the Souls’ winning formula that’s been refined for more than a decade, the result is a grueling yet liberating masterpiece in all aspects.
Exploring The Lands Between is an experience that combines challenge, curiosity, and discovery, as you find new areas of interest that are filled with secrets, quests, and treasure. It is by no means an easy journey, but the game gives you more than enough options to tip the balance in your favor with weapons, spells, incantations, summons, and many more.
It’s an experience that everyone should at least try once, especially since this is the best starting point for those who want to dive into the Souls series or genre.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a stark reminder that RPGs, especially turn-based RPGs, will never go out of style. In what can already be considered as 2025’s biggest surprise, Sandfall Interactive was able to create a masterpiece in their first try.
Combat combines real-time action and classic JRPG style, where attacks engage you by pressing the necessary prompts to deal maximum damage. In defense, however, enemy attacks can either be parried or dodged, with the former rewarding you in the form of a counterattack when all attacks are parried.
It’s a rewarding system that gets better the more you know how to utilize it in your favor. With a well-realized story of fantasy, memorable characters, charming creatures, and compelling themes, the result is an RPG that challenges you and the genre by pushing the standards of turn-based gameplay.
3. Horizon Forbidden West

Set in a post-apocalyptic United States, Horizon Forbidden West tells the story of Aloy and the theme of the ever-advancing march of technology. Considered as a bigger and better version of the predecessor in almost every way, the game lets you explore a world that you can easily get lost in, both in narrative and gameplay.
With improvements and refinements made to its already engaging combat focused on archery, traps, and elements, it’s an action RPG that’s bound to compel you to experience the environment that blends machine and nature. Guerrilla Games has created an IP that will leave a lasting impression on players and the genre alike.
2. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

| Release Date | Developer | Publisher |
|---|---|---|
| February 29, 2024 | Square Enix | Square Enix |
| Systems | ||
| PS5, PC | ||
| Overall Score | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 96/100 | ||||
| Story | Gameplay | Visuals | Audio | Value for Money |
| 9/10 | 9/10 | 10/10 | 10/10 | 10/10 |
Square Enix continues its crusade in modernizing the Final Fantasy franchise with Final Fantasy VII REBIRTH, the second installment in the REMAKE trilogy. Reimagining a beloved classic is challenging, especially when a remaster would suffice and appease the fans. Instead, Square Enix went above and beyond to not only remake the game with a completely different combat system but also alter the story into a slightly different take than the original.
Without a doubt, Final Fantasy VII REBIRTH looks jaw-droppingly beautiful, and this includes the characters as well. The music is also sublime, and hearing new takes on familiar scores will make any fan get feelings of nostalgia. Aside from the combat transitioning into an action RPG hybrid with the ATB system, the game also contains a staggering amount of side content that’ll keep you playing for hours.
Is the game faithful? That’s debatable. Especially since it does away with the classic turn-based identity that the franchise was always known for. That being said, it’s still a must-play RPG because of the stunning visuals, engaging take in combat, and reimagined story.
1. Metaphor: ReFantazio

| PS5, PC | ||
| Overall Score | ||||

| Story | Gameplay | Visuals | Audio | Value for Money |
| 10/10 | 10/10 | 9/10 | 10/10 | 9/10 |
One of the boldest and arguably best JRPGs that came out last year was Atlus’ new IP: Metaphor: ReFantazio. If you’re a fan of RPGs, it wouldn’t be surprising if you’ve heard or have already played through the game. If you haven’t, then this should be one of the RPGs that you should get for the PS5 if you’re on the fence about picking one. To put it simply, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a modern take and fusion of two of their best JRPG franchises: Persona and Shin Megami Tensei.
An unforgettable cast of characters plus a fully realized world are already enough to create a compelling story, but what elevates it further is how the story unfolds and leaves a mark on the player after completion. It’s layer upon layer of what simply can be called JRPG greatness, and it’s most definitely the peak of what we would consider being the perfect JRPG. Metaphor: ReFantazio is the RPG you should have and play, and not doing so would definitely mean you’re missing out.
